But the vast majority of this episode was a waste of time. Normally, even when SP is off, it's still better than the majority of shows on TV. This is far, far from the best material South Park has produced. But it's too little, too late, and by the end I was thoroughly disappointed in this installment. Cthulhu being released by BP's drilling on the moon is a nice, nerdy touch, and the final shot of a ruminating Coon plotting his vengeance against his former teammates promises to make things interesting in the future. A quick shot of the moon shows the dead killer whale and Tom Cruise, a nice self-referential gag for the show. The last few minutes of the episode really hold most of the laughs. It's a prime example of the biggest issue with this episode – great ideas suffering from halfhearted execution. This idea would have been far funnier if it happened "on screen". But all we have is a few seconds of pictures after the fact. Cartman's insidious plan against Captain Hindsight eventually gets enacted, and Butters spends a wild night dressed as Courtney Love. Until, at least, it turns into a brutal beating of the mosquito in a surprising homage to a scene in " A Clockwork Orange". The internal strife within the the Coon and Friends organization just amounts to bickering, with very little comedic value. The superhero portion of the story is also lacking any real punch. There was a lot of potential for this story to be far better, but nothing ever really shines, and this BP spoof fits squarely in the "meh" category, especially since the theme is already dated. The commercials with the BP CEO apologizing are fairly funny, and the company name change to DP is quite apt. There are a number of nice moments when the story keeps to effects of all the drilling (the Louisiana shrimp guy's accent brought a smile to my face). But, for the most part, I think his role here is weak, and the episode would have been much better if it focused more on BP and the spill itself.

Perhaps he is a metaphor for all the pundits who had "expert" opinions on the spill and what BP should have done to prevent it. Captain Hindsight shows up again and provides more uselessness, but that's his role.
